Whose Life Is It Anyway?

April 15, 2015

I find myself asking this time and time again after working with a client.  Who are we living our life for?  Our children?  Our spouse?  Our parents?  Our boss?  Why do we do this?  Whose life is it?  It's yours!  So start living it that way!  I don't mean to be selfish and toss everyone else's needs aside and focus only on yourself and what you want and need.  I am suggesting that maybe, just maybe, you spend a little time on yourself and do what makes you happy.  It seems like such a simple thing yet so many people today cannot "find the time" to do this.  I put that in quotes because it's only an excuse.

We hide behind the teachings of our ancestors and even some societies that program us with the misconception that we must take care of everyone else first and then, if there is time, we can maybe do something for ourselves.  This is so wrong.  Even the airlines know this.  They tell us at the beginning of each flight that if there should be a loss of cabin pressure oxygen masks will drop from the compartment above us.  We should put OUR masks on first before assisting others.  That is a great metaphor for life as well!

Take some time each day to do what you love to do.  Even if it's a few minutes to sip on a latte, read a chapter in a book, or walk around in your garden.  Take the time to recharge your batteries and do something that makes your spirit sing.  Just for you.  Not for anyone else but for yourself.  It may seem difficult and even selfish at first but once you feel the energy of your life returning you will want to do it more and more.  Take YOUR life back now.  Afterall, whose life is it anyway.....
